Pershing County High School softball coach Jordan McKinney can’t remember the last softball practice that wasn’t windy.
“It makes it hard for my girls to practice catching fly balls,” she says. The wind didn’t slow down the Mustangs in their three non-conference games this past week. They remain on course heading towards zone and the state championship.
On Tuesday, May 2, the Mustangs hosted the Mineral County Serpents, beating them 19-8.
Wednesday’s road game (May 3) against Lowry JV ended tied at 14.
This past Friday was the last regular game of the year and senior day. Pershing County beat Truckee 16-2.
The Mustangs stand at 20-5-2 overall, and 14-4 in the Northern 2A.
They are one of the top-ranked teams in the conference, along with Yerington and Battle Mountain.
“The games were good. We had lots of girls get to see the field and get some at bats. It was good to see how much depth we have,” said McKinney. Kaylah Hanley caught for the Mustangs against Hawthorne. Raegan Burrows pitched her first high school softball game with her sister Presley watching from the sidelines.
For senior day the team said farewell to Aledda Sam, Bela Rosas, Kassandra Swindlehurst, Sidonie Cassoret and Gabriella Denaldi.
On Friday, Pershing County plays Battle Mountain in the first round of the playoffs. They take place in West Wendover. It will be the fourth meeting of the rivals this season. Their games usually end in near ties.
On April. 26 Lovelock beat the Longhorns by one run 7-6. On April 30, Battle Mountain came out on top by one run 12-11.
You can expect a close game with both teams fighting for a berth at the state tournament.
The state championship will be in Las Vegas May 19 - 21.
