They all made the cut. Pershing County High School hosted the Northern 2A Regional Championships on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The top four wrestlers in each weight category qualified to advance to the state competition.
For Pershing County, that’s Devin Moura (113 pounds), Caleb Nolf (138), Noel Zaldivar (145), Nik Pavlov (152) and Dmitri Zveniatckovskii (132).
“We had a good day of wrestling but left a little bit out there,” said PCHS coach Mike Brooks. “We were happy to qualify everybody and finish third in the north.”
Pershing County racked up 73 team points, topped only by Battle Mountain (259.5) and Yerington (202). Eureka (68) and Pyramid Lake (50) rounded out the top five.
With only five wrestlers, Pershing County was one of the smallest teams.
That didn’t slow down the Mustangs as they outwrestled nearly a dozen visitors to the high school gym.
Steve Evenson announced. Buzz Brooks and Bobby Gibson helped coach. Volunteers banded together to make the day a success.
Moura and Pavlov each placed second. Nolf and Zveniatckovskii finished third. Zaldivar came in fourth.
Moura, a sophomore, nearly pulled off an upset for the championship against Jace Smith from Yerington.
“This was Devin’s best match of the season,” said the coach. “He hasn’t fared too well against that opponent to this point.”
Pavlov, a junior, lost the first-place 152-pound match against Battle Mountain’s Stone Whitlock.
“It was a tough loss, but Nik looks strong going into the state tournament,” said the coach.
Nolf won the third-place match against James Filippini of Eureka, avenging an earlier loss. The graduating senior heads to the final state wrestling championship of his high school years.
According to the coach, Zveniatckovskii started slowly but built up momentum.
“He finished strong,” said Coach Brooks. Zveniatckovskii, a sophomore, won the third-place match by fall over Jackie Sceirine of Smith Valley.
“We were excited to qualify Noel (Zaldivar) as a freshman,” said Brooks.
Soon, all five wrestlers will go for the gold at the state championships.
The NIAA 2A/3A Championships take place Feb. 14-15 at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite. The 4A wrestles in Las Vegas this year.
