Fifth-grade students from French Ford Middle School bared the chilly weather to release baby trout fry from the Trout in the Classroom program on Feb. 20 at the James Kinney Pond on Reinhart Lane.

Students had the opportunity to learn from the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Outdoor School, the U.S. Forest Service, and others at different education stations.

Kids have been learning about fish and the outdoors through the Trout in the Classroom program for nearly 25 years, with the help of many community partners.

The students watch the trout grow in tanks in their classroom from eggs, to alevin, to fry and then help release them, after which they will grow into juveniles and then breeding adults.
