Students throughout Winnemucca recently received a backpack with two books written by United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor as part of the Reading & Robes literacy program.

Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Michael Montero visited the Boys & Girls Club of Winnemucca to distribute backpacks and talk to students about the importance of books and reading.

Reading & Robes backpacks were also distributed to children of participants of the various Sixth Judicial Court specialty court programs in Winnemucca last Monday.

Reading & Robes is a community outreach initiative of the National Judicial College that began in 2019.

The grant-funded program involves judges wearing their robes and reading aloud to younger students from culturally diverse books with themes of justice, fairness and the law.

The program receives support from the William N. Pennington Foundation, the NV Energy Foundation and the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation.
