Pershing County’s wood duck population could explode in the future thanks to a Ducks Unlimited project. Lowry High School shop students in Winnemucca built 35 wood duck nest boxes and sites are needed along the Humboldt River between Lovelock and Rye Patch.
Ducks Unlimited Chairman-elect Lee Bosch of Winnemucca told Pershing County leaders there are wood ducks in the Lovelock area so this is the best place to start the nest box project. The boxes will be mounted about eye level on poles driven into the ground. The elevated boxes should protect ducklings from predators so the project could increase the wood duck count.
